Living in Collingwood

Why I love calling Collingwood home

I live and work here, and I never get tired of it. You get a working harbour, a heritage main street, the escarpment on the horizon and Georgian Bay out front. Here's what everyday life looks like here, and what I tell buyers who are thinking about moving up.

Harbour & waterfront

The Terminals: Collingwood’s signature landmark

You can spot it from the beaches, the trails and the top of the escarpment. The Collingwood Terminals grain elevator has stood over the harbour since 1929. Its silos were poured over 30 straight days, around the clock, and it has been unused since 1993. The Town bought it in 1997, and its revitalization (the Terminals Point project) is now in planning. Around it you'll find Millennium Park, the boardwalk and the Harbour Circle walking route, which is where this town's shipbuilding history really comes alive.

Parks

Sunset Point Park

A much-loved waterfront park on St. Lawrence Street. There's a shoreline beach, volleyball courts, a stage and an accessible playground themed on Collingwood itself, with a lighthouse, wetland, town hall and forest. As the name promises, it's the place for sunsets over the bay.

Downtown

Historic Hurontario Street

Downtown Collingwood is a designated Heritage Conservation District. Hurontario Street is lined with brick storefronts full of independent shops, cafés and restaurants. On Saturdays from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving, the Downtown Farmers' Market sets up at Second and Pine.

Mountain

Blue Mountain & the ski clubs

Blue Mountain Village is roughly a 15-minute drive west, with 50+ shops, restaurants and bars at the base of the resort. Along the escarpment are the area's six private ski clubs: Alpine, Beaver Valley, Craigleith, Georgian Peaks, Osler Bluff and Toronto Ski Club.

Tree-lined path on the Collingwood trail network

Trails

The Georgian Trail & town trails

The Georgian Trail follows a former rail line about 34 km along the bay from Collingwood to Meaford. The Collingwood Trails Network adds more than 60 km of multi-use paths linking parks, the waterfront and downtown. In winter you can walk, cycle, ski or snowshoe on it.

The Collingwood Museum with gardens in front

Arts & heritage

Galleries, museum & music

Creative Simcoe Street is home to galleries and studios, including the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts, The Press Room Gallery and Tremont Studios, plus the murals of Collingwood Art Alley. The Collingwood Museum at 45 St. Paul Street tells the story of the town's shipyards.

On the calendar

  • Collingwood Elvis™ Festival: our famous tribute-artist festival returns July 22–25, 2027.
  • Sidelaunch Days: the town's signature waterfront festival, celebrating our shipbuilding heritage with tall ships, live music and paddle races (August 7–9 in 2026).
  • Downtown Farmers' Market: Saturday mornings from Victoria Day weekend to Thanksgiving.
  • Collingwood Art Crawl: a free, self-guided art and music tour through downtown each September.

Everyday essentials

  • Health care: Collingwood General & Marine Hospital. A new hospital is planned for a 54-acre site at Poplar Sideroad and Raglan Street and is now in detailed planning.
  • Schools: elementary schools in both the public and Catholic boards, plus two high schools, Collingwood Collegiate Institute (public) and Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School.
  • Getting to Toronto: about a 2 to 2¼ hour drive, roughly 130–150 km, depending on traffic and where you're headed.
