Meaford harbour on Georgian Bay with boats moored along the breakwall

Surrounding area guide

Meaford

Meaford is the harbour town at the western end of the Georgian Trail. It has a historic downtown, a busy waterfront and miles of orchard and farm country, west of Thornbury along Highway 26.

Character

Meaford is a lower-tier municipality in Grey County on Nottawasaga Bay. The town grew up at the mouth of the Bighead River in the 1800s. Apple orchards have long been part of the local economy, and the area has also become a place for weekend and seasonal homes. The Canadian Army's 4th Canadian Division Training Centre is about 5 km northwest of town.

Homes you'll find

In town, you'll find older homes on tree-lined streets close to the harbour and downtown, plus some newer construction. The surrounding municipality is mostly rural, with farms, orchards, hobby-farm acreage and stretches of waterfront along the bay.

Amenities & things to do

Downtown centres on Sykes Street and Meaford Hall, the restored 1909 Town Hall and Opera House that reopened as an arts and cultural centre in 2006. The harbour is the heart of the waterfront. Highway 26 connects east to Thornbury and Collingwood and west to Owen Sound.

Trails & outdoors

Meaford is the western end of the Georgian Trail, so you can ride or walk through Thornbury and Craigleith all the way to Collingwood. The Bighead River valley and the surrounding countryside are good for quiet backroad cycling.

Who it suits

Buyers who want a real small-town feel, people looking for acreage or a hobby farm, retirees who want to be on the bay, and anyone happy to trade a longer drive to the ski hills for more space.

Schools

The Bluewater District School Board runs Georgian Bay Community School (JK to Grade 12) and St. Vincent-Euphrasia Elementary School in Meaford. Confirm the school and bus route for a specific address with the board.

Short-term rental rules

Meaford doesn't license short-term rentals yet. Today they're regulated through the zoning by-law as "cottage rental," and some lands also fall under Niagara Escarpment development control. The Municipality's plan is a registry pilot in 2026, a regulatory by-law and licensing in 2027, and licensing, enforcement and a Municipal Accommodation Tax in 2028. Watch for changes if rental income matters to you.

Peter's take

Meaford is a short drive from Collingwood but feels a world away. If you want the Georgian Bay lifestyle without the ski-season traffic, it belongs on your list.
